Moving from Japan to the UK

If you are considering relocating from Japan to the UK, there are several things you need to consider so that the transition will be a smooth one.

Explore housing options

Deciding on the type of accommodation you desire will greatly depend on where in the UK you wish to take up residence. Generally, people in London and other big cities in the UK reside in flats, for the simple reason that it can be difficult to find larger houses in those areas. While you may be accustomed to the high prices associated with housing in Japan, that is pretty much the same case in the UK, unless you choose to reside in the suburban areas. Additionally, the suburban areas are ideal for backyard gardening as this is where you will find the traditional English row houses. Those types of houses have small gardens at the back or front of the property so it is easy for you to take up this kind of activity.

Learn the Language

If you are moving from Japan to the UK for work, you need to be fluent in the English language. This is because English is the primary language spoken in that country. It is therefore highly recommended that you get accustomed to the language as well as the English accent which can be difficult to understand at times. Importantly, if you are a Japanese and English is not your first language, endeavor to improve your knowledge of it before moving to the UK from Japan so that you will be able to communicate easily with new friends, coworkers and acquaintances.

Be aware of the British Culture

It is well known that British people love to joke, so their sense of humor may not be quite what you are accustomed to back in Japan and it may take some time for you to get used to it. Other than that, the British enjoy musical events and theatres. They also like to meet up with friends at the local pubs, so get accustomed to these types of places if you wish to meet new friends. If you are moving from Japan it will perhaps be both important and good to make friends with British people.

The fact that the UK is a fusion of cultures cannot be taken lightly as a wide mixture of food is incorporated into this unique culture. In the UK you can easily indulge in fish and chips in the local pubs and you will also find food from Indian, Spanish, Italian, French and even German cuisine. You may even find a couple of sushi spots or other Japanese restaurants. While you may need to get accustomed to these different tastes, you may opt to take along with you some nonperishable Japanese food from Japan or have them sent to you from Japan by asking some friend or a family back in Japan.

Moving furniture and Appliances

When relocating, you may desire to take along appliances, furniture and even items of clothing. You are therefore encouraged to do the necessary research as it relates to shipping them. Bearing in mind that shipping furniture may be quite costly because oftentimes these items are very robust. Whichever international moving company you opt to use will handle the shipping of your items, large or small, do ensure that your items are under an active insurance policy, in case of unforeseen situations, you will be compensated for any damages.
