• Sewing machine
• Scissors

Steps to make a face mask

1. First, you have to cut out two 10-by-6-inch (roughly 25 x 15 cm) rectangles of cotton fabric.
2. You will sew the mask as if it was a single piece of fabric. So stack the two rectangles. 
3. Then you have to fold over the long sides of the material around 1/4-inch or 0.5-1cm and hem.  (Hem just means folding the edges of your material over and stitching them)
4. Then you have to fold the double layer of fabric over ½ inch along the short sides and stitch down.
5.  You should add some thin wire to the top hem of your face mask. It will help you to shape it around your nose. (jewelry wire works well for this.) So you can place the wire along the top length of the material and next you have to fold over and sew it down.
6. Now you can thread your elastic or hair ties through it with the help of a needle or a pin, or safety pin or basically anything.
7. Then you can tie the ends tight. With your ties threaded through the sides of your mask, you have to tie your elastic or hair ties in secure knots. 
8. You can add some stitches on either end of your face. It will help to keep your elastic in place.

So it is good to use tightly woven cotton, such as quilting fabric or cotton sheets to make your own face mask. If you want to make it really clear which part of your mask is the front and which is the back, what can you do?  You can use two different colors for your face mask. If you only have a string, what can you do? You can make the ties longer and you can tie the mask behind your head. You can gather the sides of the mask on the elastic and adjust so the mask fits your face.

If you want you can make a T-shirt face mask. You will need only a T-shirt, scissors, and a coffee filter. If you do not have a coffee filter, you can use a paper towel too. Actually, your T-shirt should be 100 percent cotton. And as opaque as possible.

And, you can simply cut the bottom off your T-shirt and start making a face mask.  The height of the amount of material you need should be the length from the top of your nose to underneath your chin.  Also, it is good to cut bigger than you think you need so you can trim the excess later. 

How to make a non-sewn face mask?

If you do not have a sewing machine, you have another way to make your own face mask. So how to make your own face mask without using a sewing machine? Actually, there are a few simple steps to make face masks without using a sewing machine. 

Materials 

You need washable, breathable fabric (cut approximately 20”x20”), rubber bands, and scissors to make a face mask in this way.  If you have no rubber bands, you can use hair ties too.

So how to make masks in this way? You have to fold the washable, breathable fabric in half. Then you can fold top-down and fold the bottom up. After that, you can place rubber bands or hair ties about 6 inches apart. Then you can fold side to the middle and tuck.
